Ring Night

January 6, 2010 by katy@hollins

Oh, Ring Night. How embarrassing, yet wonderful you were. I was in a group with several of my closest friends, with the best helpers ever. When Thursday came around, I was nervous all day while waiting on my first demand. Finally, that evening, around 4, our group met up to find out about our skit. Our first skit was to be Disney Princess Rappers. I ended up being Sleeping Beauty, and if you know me, I am one of the worst rappers. Ever. So I put on an eye mask on top of my head, sunglasses on my face, and a robe over my clothes and got in front of everyone in the dining hall and performed with my group. We met our helpers after the skit to go on our scavenger hunt – we spent most of our time up in Lexington since the majority of us know people at VMI. Afterward, we went over to the apartments to get the rest of demands. Thursdays demands were:
-Make an egg baby and have it with you during all of your demands. Be careful with it. There are baby snatchers out there.
-Get info about making a shoebox for Operation Christmas Child.
-Get the supplies and make a silver Volvo that you and all of your sisters can ride in.
I stayed up late that night working on my demands for that day and the following which were:
-Post an Ode to Miss Margaret in the Post Office
-Dress as a VMI Rat and observe the following rules: address all seniors as “Your Highness,” run whenever near Front Quad, make all corners sharp-no rounding the edges, eat like a rat-square meals, strain, and wear a sign that says “My name is Katy. If lost, please return me to Sister Mary Margarita.”
-Post “Top 10″ reasons why Lexington, VA is THE place to be,
-Bake cookies for Dr. Lynch
-Bake cookies for your helpers.
-Decorate a picture frame
-Have a debate with Ellen about who is better, Lynch or Ra?
-Skit: War between Pink Ladies and Thunderbirds. You are a Thunderbird.
After accomplishing all of these demands, we all got ready for the skit. I was Kinicke-and had a T-Birds jacket in my closet, so I wore that over a white t-shirt and slicked my hair back. We drove up in our “silver Volvo” and performed Greased Lightning but substituted the words silver Volvo. We then went out and had a paint war to decorate our t-shirts.
Saturday my demands were:
-Post “Top 10″ reasons to be Conservative
-Be a cat
-Go to BubbleCake and pick up cupcakes
-Go to Front Quad and do the Hand Jive with the other juniors
-After this, march around Front Quad for 20 minutes saying “Chugga, chugga, chugga, chugga, CHOO CHOO!!”
-Decorate a glass
-Perform “I Can Hear the Bells” from Hairspray. Perform a gymnastics routing
-Write ode to Dr. Lynch
-Write Top 10 reasons College Republicans are the best
-Dance to “You’re the one that I want” from Grease with another junior. You are Sandy.
-Our final group skit was Twilight. I was designated to be Jasper, which was awesome, because I got to just stand there and be awkward. After all of the groups performed, we found out who our senior sisters were. I got my basket full of things including a beautiful blanket she made me, a personalized bag, and lots of other things. The whole weekend was a blast and a great time to bond with my friends. I’m already looking forward to being a senior sister next year!!!
